Week 9
Isaiah 40:13-14 “Who has directed the Spirit of the Lord, or as His counselor has informed Him? With whom did He consult and who gave Him understanding? And who taught Him in the path of justice and taught Him knowledge and informed Him of the way of understanding?”
Wisdom belongs to the Lord! There is no wisdom except the wisdom of the Lord. So often people think themselves wise and learned only to demonstrate their foolishness and ignorance by their life choices. This passage reminds us that God does not need or have a source where He gained wisdom. It also reminds us that God is not dependent upon any counsel, contemplation, or information to think and act in keeping with His sovereign wisdom and knowledge.
If we would be wise, we must first acknowledge the infinite wisdom of the Lord. God alone is infinite in knowledge, wisdom, and understanding. He needs no counselor, and no one advises Him as to how things should be or should work. He alone is God, and He alone is the source of all true wisdom in this life for us. We must never add human thoughts to God’s wisdom; God only is the source of truth and understanding.
We must also recognize that God has given a revelation of His wisdom to us, and this revelation is the Scriptures. God has made His wisdom known in the Scriptures and in Christ. If we would be wise, we must look humbly to the Lord Jesus and the teaching of the Word of God. Here God has revealed His wisdom, and we must not depart from this wisdom that He gives to us.
If we are to walk in God’s wisdom, we must commit ourselves to thinking His thoughts and following His teaching and path, as given to us in the Bible. We must not turn to human wisdom for answers to life’s greatest questions and solutions to life’s greatest problems. We must seek the wisdom of the Lord by seeking His truth in the Scriptures. Let us determine that we will live our lives with the Bible as a lamp unto our feet, and a light unto our path (Psalm 119:105). The light we need to live wisely in these days comes from God through the teaching of the Scriptures.
Christian friend, we may be living in a time when people are turning away from God and His wisdom. But we who know the Lord through faith in Christ must seek to be wise by soaking our minds and hearts in the clear teaching of the Scripture centered on God’s redemptive work in Christ. It is only here where we will find true wisdom to live in our moment of time.
Prayer: Dear Lord, help me to not seek answers and solutions from people, but help me to look to You in the teaching of Your Scripture. Open the Bible to my mind and heart, and help me to understand what Your Word teaches, so that I can grow in knowledge and in wisdom for Your glory and honor. Amen.
