Week 8
2 Kings 4:23, 26 “And she said, ‘It will be well’…Please run now to meet her and say to her, ‘Is it well with you? Is it well with your husband? Is it well with the child?’ And she answered, ‘It is well’.”
This woman was grieving the sudden and unexpected death of her son, the son that God had miraculously given to her through the prophetic word of Elisha. She and her husband had been gracious and generous with the man of God during his travels near their home. She had joyfully served Elisha, and this couple had provided a little room for God’s servant so that he might rest when on occasion he had cause to pass their way. In gratitude Elisha prayed to the Lord on their behalf, for they were childless, and God had mercifully granted this request. A child was born to them. But as the child grew the day came when some life-threatening malady had struck him and the child, the gift of God, had died. This mother, in her grief laid the lifeless body of her dear son on the bed she had provided for the prophet, and she journeyed to find Elisha.
It is most intriguing that the text of Scripture says that twice she verbally declared faith in God’s goodness and power, even in this extremity of life. When her husband asked why she was going to see the prophet, Elisha, she replied, “It will be well.” And when Elisha, seeing her approaching, sent his servant to her to inquire, “Is it well with you, with your husband, and with the child?” Her trusting reply was, “It is well.” And yet, when finally she came to Elisha, overwhelmed with her grief and sorrow, she fell at his feet in a final act of desperation and despair; her heart was broken (4:27).
And yet, we see faith and trust in this dear woman’s words. Is it well? Yes, it will be well; it is well.
Dear Christian friend, is it well with you this day? Does life sap you of your spiritual vitality? Have circumstances pushed you into the corner of doubt and uncertainty? Do you find yourself befuddled and ambushed by sudden and unexpected sorrow? Is it well with you?
As this woman declared, so must we declare that all is well. As she knew, so we know that God has been good to us. Our history is colored with the bright hues of divine mercy. We have known such glorious gifts of mercy and grace in days gone by. Has our God abandoned us now? Absolutely not! In this moment of challenge and fear, every promise God has given to us in Christ is true and alive with power and love. We are in His hands cradled in the soft cushion of His love. Dear precious Christian friend, no matter what your situation might be today, because of God’s providential care and provision, all is well. Trust in Him who cannot fail you or falter in the doing of His will.
Prayer: Dear Lord, help me now to trust in You. In this painful moment, I look to You and say, “Through Your grace and promise, all is well.” Amen.
