Week 6: Colossians 2:13-14

Week 6

Colossians 2:13-14 “When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions, having cancelled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.”

It is certainly true that sinners do not know how bad they are and how dangerously they live before the Judge of the universe.  This passage colors in dark hues the state of the unconverted.  They are dead in their transgressions, their sinful flesh is unclean (uncircumcised), and they are unforgiven for the sin-debt they owe God.  What a desperate condition this is!  The perfect word that describes such a state is the word, HOPELESS!

However, every Christian knows that this was the very condition in which Jesus found us and saved us.  We know that the heavenly Father through Jesus saved us from the same desperate state.  The Father made us “alive together with Him (Christ).”  The Father has “forgiven us all our transgressions.”  The Father has “cancelled out the certificate of debt consisting of the decrees against us, which were hostile to us.”  The Father has “taken it (the debt) out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.”

Jesus in His saving work on the cross is our Deliverer from our sinful selves and the sinful state before God the Father.  Jesus died for us, Jesus paid for our sins, and Jesus provided forgiveness and full pardon on the cross.  We are forgiven, and we are alive in Him.

The Christian life is a life of joy, reconciliation, peace, and love.  We are made right with God the Father through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Christian friend, let us this day celebrate the great gift that has been given to us in Jesus Christ through the cross He bore for us.  Let us celebrate the forgiveness of sins and let us celebrate the new life we have in Him.  May the Lord grant that we today will live in the joyful sunshine of Christ’s saving work for us.  May we exude to others around us the fulfillment and joy that we have in Christ.  May holy happiness be ours in the experiences we have this day.  We are forgiven, we are right with God, and we belong to our Savior now and forevermore.

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank You for saving me through the Lord Jesus Christ and His sacrifice on the cross.  Thank You for granting to me through Him the forgiveness of my sins.  Thank You for making me right with You through Jesus.  Help me this day to live a life that honors You and help me to express through my life the gratitude that I feel in my heart for Jesus and Your saving work.  Amen.
