Week 52: Revelation 21:6

Week 52

Revelation 21:6 “Then He said to me, ‘It is done.  I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end.  I will give to the one who thirsts from the spring of the water of life without cost.”

So much in life feels incomplete and imperfect.  Never do we feel in this life that we have achieved or accomplished the absolute best.  There is always more to do, and there is always more growth to be experienced.

But this text takes us to the end of historical reality and redemptive history.  When He said, “it is done”, He echoes the sentiment of Jesus from the cross when He said, “It is finished.”  Because Jesus finished the atoning work that saves sinners and forgives sins, and because Jesus rose from the dead and is now the victor over sin, death, and Satan, He is exalted to the highest place and most ascended authority.  It is done; there is nothing more to do.  The second coming of Christ is but the natural and necessary future application of His victory which is already completed.

John said that he heard the Lord Jesus say of Himself as the exalted Savior and Lord, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end.”  Jesus is the One, and the only One, to whom all power and authority belong.  He begins and finishes our faith, and He begins and ends our journey of salvation in this life.  He starts our journey, and He will finish it and take us to heavenly glory where we will forever bask in His joyful, holy glory.

This is good news for us.  Listen to what Jesus said to John, “I will give to the one who thirsts from the spring of the water of life without cost.” This is what Jesus said to the woman at the well in John 4.  This is what Jesus said in His great invitation in John 7, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.”  This great divine invitation to the thirsty sinner is also found in Isaiah 55:1, “Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat!”  This is the invitation of the great “feast preparer” of the universe.  The thirsty soul may drink, and the hungry soul may feast with joy.  Jesus is the One to whom you must come; come to Him.  We hear His invitation in Matthew 11:28 “Come to Me all you who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

It is done; the gift is prepared, and the invitations go out to all who will listen.  Are you one of those today?  Will you look to Christ today as the One who can save you, as the One who can shepherd you through the vast journey of your life?

Prayer: Dear Lord, I know that in this world nothing is complete and finished. But I also know that Your salvation is complete in Christ.  There is nothing that I need that is missing in Christ’s saving life for me. I trust the ever-living Christ to be my beginning and my end; I look to Him to grant to me and to my thirsty soul the water of life eternal and abundant.  Amen.
