Week 4: Psalm 90:14

Week 4: Psalm 90:14

Week 4

Psalm 90:14 “O satisfy us in the morning with Your lovingkindness, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.”

How glorious it is to get the day started off right!  To start the day in such a fashion sets the tone and pace for the entire day.

The psalmist prays to the Lord that the Lord would “satisfy us in the morning” with His “lovingkindness.”  It is good to begin the day with the Lord’s lovingkindness, His providential goodness to us.  It is sweet to meditate upon God’s tenderness and kindness to us in Christ and to celebrate the Lord’s covenantal commitment to watch over us and bring us some happy day to His home in heaven.

But let us also think of the “morning” in a different way; let us think of the morning as the beginning of life itself.  It is precious to watch little ones come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.  When our lives are in the early days, the “morning”, it is good to get biblical and theological instruction that our tender hearts may be bent toward the God of heaven.  And when God graciously saves a little boy or girl, we immediately think of the words of Jesus, “Permit the children to come to Me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these (various versions of Matthew 19:14; Mark 10:14; Luke 18:16).”  How wonderful it is for a man or a woman to come to saving faith in their childhood, in the morning of their lives.  When we are satisfied with the Lord’s lovingkindness in the morning of life, “we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.”

In addition, we also think of the “morning” as that time in life when things begin.  It is good to begin a task, a project, a job, study for a degree, or beginning a new season in life with this prayer: “Dear Lord, satisfy us in the morning with Your lovingkindness, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.”  It is wonderfully delightful to walk with God in all our experiences of life; we must seek Him first as we begin any “journey” in this life.

The text gives us what is paramount to a promise when it says, “that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.”  The issue that is prominent in the Christian life is JOY IN THE LORD!  Delighting in our precious Savior is quintessential to the nature of the redeemed.  We find in Him satisfaction, joy, and gladness.  Our hearts rise in glorious gratitude and love to sing of His goodness all of our days.  This is the special song of those who seek Him in the morning of life.

Sweet Christian friend, there is never a bad time to seek the Lord, but it is best to seek Him in the beginning of anything in this life.  Turn to Him and pursue His ways in the morning of your life, of your day, and of your tasks.  Then you will set a path of truth and goodness all along your journey.

Prayer: Dear Lord, I seek You from now on in all the mornings that I have left in this life.  From this moment on, I will turn to You early in my days and early in my responsibilities.  I will seek Your favor, Your assistance, and Your glory in all that I do.  Please lead me forth to see Your lovingkindness in life and to know the joy and gladness that inspires songs in the heart.  Amen.
