Week 39
Psalm 104:24 “O Lord, how many are Your works! In wisdom You have made them all; the earth is full of Your possessions.”
Knowing and believing that God made the earth, and all places on the earth are His has some wonderful and bountiful comforts to bestow upon the Christian.
For example, when traveling from home (perhaps far from home), the Christian sometimes senses displacement. Sometimes when we leave home to take a new job, get married, or go to school, and this requires us to leave home, we can feel displaced, lost, and alone. We feel separated from the place we know and where we belong. And what about if our home was destroyed by fire, water, or wind. We feel a deep loss that aches within.
But the Bible reminds us that the earth is full of God’s possessions; He made the earth, and the earth belongs to Him. The sovereign and beneficent Creator has made all His works with wisdom and goodness; we can trust Him in all things. This earth is the Lord’s and everything in it.
Christian friend, if you are in a circumstance that has left you lonely, separated from the ones you love, and filled with uncertainty in this big world that God has made, think on the great truths that this passage gives to you.
First, all things belong to the Lord. The Lord is the Creator, Ruler, and Owner of all creation. The earth and all that is in it belongs to the Lord. The Christian, no matter where in the world he or she travels, we are in the Lord’s territory. This gives us a sense of home wherever we might be.
Second, God has made all things in wisdom, and in wisdom He rules and governs all things in the lives of His children. The earth and all its physical laws are governed by eternal sovereign decrees of the Lord. There is pattern and purpose in everything God made. We will find this to be true as we engage with God’s creation. This gives us a sense of solid security and hope. His wisdom is seen in His creation and ruling of His world.
Third, as Christians, we belong to the Lord, and He is with us wherever we go and whatever we do. Christians belong to the Lord, for we are bought with a price. We are called to glorify His name in our lives in our moment in human history on this earth that God has made. We are God’s people living in creation that God made. And though this creation is fallen because of humanity’s sin, we still know with certainty that God providentially oversees His people in His creation.
Prayer: Dear Lord, help me to remember when I am alone and lonely that You are with me. Help me to remember that You are in charge of my circumstances, and I can trust You to watch over me and care for me. Amen.
