Week 29: Romans 5:3-5

Week 29

Romans 5:3-5 “We also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.”

God can do all things; His power is incomprehensible!  If this is so, then why does God allow His people to struggle with tribulation?  Tribulation comes in all sizes and sorts, but every tribulation has one important common trait: Tribulation puts the squeeze on our faith, our joy, and our hope!  Tribulation feels like a dark cloud precipitously waiting to drop buckets of grief upon our heads.  Tribulation puts pressure on us, and we struggle to maintain our emotional and spiritual balance.

So, again, why would God allow this?  Our text gives part of the answer; it reminds us of the vital tool tribulation is in our lives when used by our wonderful Master to shape us in His image.

Note the formula given in the text; each part is sequentially linked, yet bridges to the next.  Tribulations enable us to persevere, and without tribulations, we would never experience perseverance; we would never have a steadfast soul anchored in truth.  But perseverance develops proven character, and proven character bears the fruit of hope. And such hope does not disappoint, because Christian hope is fed by the love of God, which is poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit given to us.  Therefore, the end result of tribulation in this life in the one who looks to Jesus is to experience in a soul-ennobling manner the LOVE OF GOD!  This is our goal; this is God’s promise!

Dear Christian friend, feed your heart on the rich promise of God; you will find His truth enough for you.  Don’t try to create your own path, because God’s way is the ONLY WAY to where you want to go.  This narrow path ends in life eternal and joy indescribable.  Live your life in the light of God’s teaching, and seek Him always and evermore, no matter what happens to you.  He is never absent, and He is never disinterested!  You will find Him to be true to every promise and faithful in every respect.  Run to Jesus and jump into His arms!

Prayer: Dear Lord, help me never to doubt in times of tribulation what I know to be true in the sunshine of Your favor.  Protect me from giving in and giving up!  Help me to believe You when it is the most difficult to do so.  Thus, help me to honor You through trusting You in every circumstance and situation.  Thank You for all You are and all You have given me in Christ.  Amen.
