Week 28
2 Corinthians 5:7 “For we walk by faith, not by sight”
The Christian does not know the path God has chosen for him, not completely. This path is sovereignly designed and determined by the great God of the universe. The full extent of this glorious plan is outside the scope of our human capacity. Our challenge is to “run with endurance the race set before us” (See Hebrews 12:1).
The path set before us is wisely chosen by the Lord, especially crafted for us and God’s purpose for our lives. We do well to know the Lord’s ways, as revealed in the Scripture. Biblical teaching and counsel will guide us along the way as a glorious light (See Psalm 119:105). God calls us to walk in the light, the light of His Word, and not to follow human ingenuity and supposition.
This is not to say that we are passive and apathetic in our efforts in this life. Surely, we are to be energetic and industrious; we are to be busy about the Lord’s work and obey the Lord with all our hearts. But we MUST understand that God’s providential will for us is secret and hidden from our knowledge. He reserves the right to guide us along the path which He has chosen for us. We say with the psalmist, “Teach me Your paths. Lead me in Your truth and teach me, for You are the God of my salvation” (See Psalm 25:4, 5).
As we seek to plan and strategize our lives, let us remember the truism given to us in Proverbs 19:21, “Many plans are in a man’s heart, but the counsel of the Lord will stand.” In a popular paraphrase of that verse, the message is this: “Man proposes, but God disposes” (LB).
Therefore, let us as God’s children seek to honor the Lord, to love Him with all our hearts, and let us passionately pursue His glory in the magnification of His holy name. This is our calling! But let us also remember that God determines how things work out. We walk by faith, and we walk in faith. Ours is to trust in the living God to guide and direct our path. When we are confused, let us seek the Lord’s biblical counsel and will. And when no answers come in the light of the Scripture, let us prayerfully commit the matter to the Lord, seek to do our best in doing what is right, and trust God to make His way known to us in the way He chooses when He chooses.
The day WILL come when the unseen realities WILL become clear to the eye of obedient faith. The day WILL come when every divine promise given to us in Christ WILL be fulfilled in every respect beyond our wildest imaginations. We will never regret doing what is right and trusting in the Lord.
Prayer: Dear Lord, please guide me through Your Word, the Bible, and help me to remain faithful to You when I don’t know what to do. Please lead me in keeping with Your grace and truth for all the days of my life. Amen.
