Week 27: Psalm 63:1

Week 27: Psalm 63:1

Week 27

Psalm 63:1 “O God, You are my God; I shall seek You earnestly; my soul thirsts for You, my flesh yearns for You, in a dry and weary land where there is no water.”

Happy is the person who knows that his joy is the Lord!  There is no greater discovery than this.

The psalmist truly understands this truth – this truth about his personal need and desire for God.  The psalmist seeks God; he seeks God earnestly and desperately.  There is no greater pursuit in his life than to pursue God.  David advised his son, Solomon, to seek God with all his heart.  David said, “As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a whole heart and willing mind (1 Chronicles 28:9).”  The writer of Psalm 63 has an inner drive that consumes his life, and this drive is for the Lord God.  Nothing equals or surpasses this heart passion in his life.  His soul is THIRSTY for God.  He feels like his life is a desert, and he yearns deeply for God just like he is seeking water in a desert place.

The essential and permanent need for God in our souls is the constant reality of human existence.  Even if a person does not acknowledge his or her need for the Lord, the need is there.  There is nothing greater than this.  Nothing will satisfy the soul than this; the Lord is truly the great need of the inner desires of the soul.  We struggle, we stumble, and we stagger along in life, trying to find our way, tripping over fallen dreams and insufficient human plans, while all along our deep need, our joy, and our yearning is for God Himself.

This world, its philosophies and ideologies, its utopian plans and promises, is a dry desert.  It promises much, and it either delivers nothing, or it delivers a false substitute for the real thing.  And the collateral damage in human sorrow and despair is intense and total.  Lives, marriages, families, and communities are left adrift in a sea of uncertainty and loss; human solutions do not work, and they often result in further problems.

All the while, the truth keeps calling to us, speaking to us that God is the answer.  Jesus Christ continually said in His teachings and conversations that He was God, the God-Man, the Messiah, the Savior, and the Lord.  He said that He was the Light of the world, the Bread of life, and He alone gives LIVING WATER.  We find our souls refreshed and renewed in Jesus Christ alone.  Brothers and Sisters in Christ, let us pursue the Master of our souls; let us seek Him for whom our souls long and crave.  We must seek Him, we must love Him, and we must find our joy and delight in Him for whom we were made.  Let us not seek our pleasure in anything or anyone else; Jesus is the One whom we must seek and in whom we must take satisfaction.

Prayer: Dear Lord, deliver me from the idolatry of seeking from others and other things what You alone can give.  This day, please grant to me the joy and bliss that comes from loving You and depending upon You.
