Week 22
Romans 8:31 “What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us?”
Is there one condition in life that makes all the difference? Evidently, there is such a condition, for the text says, “If God is for us…” Actually, the statement is less of a condition, and it is more of an assertion. The meaning of the sentence is this: “God IS for us; therefore, nothing else and no one else matters.”
To whom is this written? It is written to those who know God the Father through faith in Jesus Christ His Son and our Savior. It is written to believers who trust in the Lord for the forgiveness of our sins, who worship the Lord as the God of heaven and earth, and who seek to follow Christ as Savior and Lord. The Scripture says to us, “God is for us!”
God is for us because He is no longer angry with us. His wrath has been appeased through the atoning work of Jesus Christ. Because Christ died for our sin, our sins are paid for in full!
God is for us because He has made us believers His children; He has adopted us into His family. We now belong to Him, and He is our heavenly-loving Father.
God is for us because we are robed in the righteousness of Jesus Christ, perfectly acceptable in His holy sight.
God is for us because He has prepared a sweet and permanent place for us in heaven.
God is for us now and always, and because He is for us, then all is well. He is for us despite sickness, sorrow, difficulty, disappointment, and fear. No matter what happens, God is always for us. He is for us; therefore, He will watch over us, protect us, care for us, lead us, and shelter us from harm. We are His, and our welfare is His great concern.
The text would be true if it said, “If God is for us, it doesn’t matter WHAT is against us.” But the text says, “If God is for us, WHO is against us?” The concern here is WHO, not WHAT. There can only be two applications of this. First, the devil is against us, but it doesn’t matter, because God is for us. Second, other people may be against us, but it doesn’t matter, because God is for us. These two categories of persons may be against us, work against us, act against us, and seek to harm us. But what does it matter, if God is for us? The reality is this: Nothing and no one can be against us to counteract and contradict the fact that God is for us.
Dear Christian friend, rest secure in the knowledge that God is FOR YOU. He chose you in Christ before the foundation of the world. You are safe in His elect love, and He will watch over you. One day He will take you home to heaven, and nothing can stop God from fulfilling His promise to you.
Prayer: Dear Lord, help me to trust in You, no matter who may be against me. Help me to fight against fear because You are for me. Thank you. Amen.
