Week 13

Psalm 68:6 “God makes a home for the lonely”

This earthly sojourn is a lonely place, a habitation for lonely people.  So many are lonely because they are not loved.  So many are lonely because they are not understood or accepted.  The lonely come in all types and categories of people.  Loneliness is universal.

But loneliness is also damaging and stultifying.  Loneliness squashes the heart and the hopes it contains.  Loneliness is like a shadow, dark with foreboding and filled with emptiness and vacuity.  Loneliness is an ache that won’t go away; it fills the soul with a sense of despair and hopelessness.  Wherever love is absent, loneliness is sure to be in full supply.

But the psalmist, David, said of God that He “makes a home for the lonely.”  God knows and understands; He cares when no one else cares.  He sees the bruised heart, and He holds our frailty with tender hands.  He makes a home for the lonely heart.  God makes a home of love, of peace, of unity, of compassion, of sweetness, and of tender and gentle concern.  His ear is open to the prayers of the lonely, and He is ready to draw near to lift up the downcast soul.

God makes a home where the lonely find belonging and acceptance.  He makes a place especially for us in His abode, and we find that in Christ and through Christ’s saving work on the cross, we are given a seat at the divine table of family and blessing.  In the Lord’s home we find safety and acceptance.  We are brought close to the God of heaven and earth, the covenant God, the God before whom we will give an account for our sin.  And yet, through Christ’s saving work on the cross atonement has been made for our sins.  Through God’s saving grace and the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit, we are found to be the targets of eternal elect love.  We find love, we find approval, and merciful reception because God has made a home for us in the gospel of Jesus Christ.  We have all that we need for our soulful bliss and felicity; we are content with divine favor and care.  Through Christ we are at home with God.

The path of sin will never bring true happiness.  The path of sin can never fulfill the inner yearnings of our souls.  The path of sin will only lead to loss and despair.  We will find estrangement from others and even estrangement from ourselves because we are estranged from God.  But once we are at peace with God through faith in Christ, then we find peace with ourselves, and we are able to be at peace with others.  We are home.

Dear friend, bring your lonely heart to Jesus and find His “home” for you through His saving grace and shepherdly care.

Prayer: Dear Lord, please take me to Your home of grace, mercy, love, and peace.  May Your holiness and glory be my happy experience and my home forever.  Amen.
