Week 13
Jeremiah 1:12 “Then the Lord said to me, ‘You have seen well, for I am watching over My word to perform it.”
The context of this verse is the judgment of the sinning people of God. God had pronounced judgment on them, and He would most assuredly oversee and fulfill that judgment. All of God’s pronouncements and promises WILL BE FULFILLED IN TIME IN KEEPING WITH HIS HOLY WORD.
But the larger point made in this text is applicable for God’s people in every generation concerning the promises of God. God makes His promises, God reveals His promises to His people, and God fulfills His promises in a fashion that is in keeping with His good holy will.
This is one of the most important truths the hurting or fearful Christian can remember. Knowing this truth and remembering this truth when we walk through the deep waters of grief, illness, and disappointment will hold us up and float us over the waves of despair.
God reveals His promises to His people. This is a gospel truth. The gospel includes the saving work of Jesus Christ, the gospel includes the call to faith in Christ, and the gospel includes the promises given to those who trust in Jesus as Lord and Savior. These promises are consistently and powerfully contained in God’s revelation of holy Scripture. The Christian would be wise to get acquainted with God’s promises in Christ. For as the Scripture says in 2 Corinthians 1:20, the promises of God are “yes” in Christ. These promises are given by the sovereign and saving God for those united to Christ by faith. These promises are our comfort, our help, our strength, and our peace. We need these promises to help us along our way.
The text reminds us also that God not only gives these promises, but God watches over our lives to fulfill these promises. This includes the sovereignty of God, and it also includes the providential power and wisdom of God, applying these promises faithfully in the right way at the right time. God is sovereign over every single solitary aspect of our lives. There is nothing outside of His control. Furthermore, God providentially intervenes in our life experience to bring about the fulfillment of His promise in our lives in the right way at the right time. This truth is inherent in the promises of God to Christians in Christ. We may be sure that God KNOWS what is going on in our lives, and that God WILLS His promises to be performed perfectly in our life experience. This IS your comfort when you fear that life has gone sideways. You can trust God totally and completely to bring about in the best possible way His promise and will in your life. Trust Him, for He is “watching over” His “word to perform it.”
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank You for the reminder that You have given great and glorious promises in Your Word to me in Christ. Thank You for reminding me that I can trust You, and I must trust. Please help me to do just that. Amen.
