Week 24: Colossians 1:13-14

Week 24

Colossians 1:13-14 “He rescued us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”

If you are saved, then two important designations can be made about you: 1) You are rescued from the domain of darkness, and 2) You are transferred into the kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Salvation in Jesus Christ is always being saved FROM and being saved FOR.  We are saved from sin, divine judgment, and hell.  But Christians are also saved for God’s family, for God’s glory, and for God’s heaven.  Both negative and positive aspects must be considered to get a full-orbed understanding of how wonderful it is to be saved.

If we maintain the perspective that we have been rescued, then we will more readily maintain peace, joy, and love, giving thanks and praise to the Lord who rescued us through the saving work of Jesus Christ.  This fallen and broken world is not a world that engenders joy and gratitude.  Most people live in the hazy mist of discouragement, disillusionment, and dejection.  But the Christian never quite gets over the glorious reality that he or she has been rescued from the domain of darkness.  Once we were slaves of sin; once we were followers of evil.  But the Lord Jesus Christ set us free from all these elements of darkness and destruction.  We have been set free to be what God created us to be in Jesus Christ.  We are forgiven of sin, and we live by the life of Jesus Christ; His life is our life, and His heaven is our destiny!

In Christ, every Christian has been transferred to the kingdom of Jesus Christ.  Our names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life, and we belong to God’s kingdom of righteousness.  Our natures are transformed, our lives regenerated, and our destiny in eternal joy is secured.  We are changed because we belong to our Savior.  This is the basis for our peace, our joy, and our assurance no matter what happens to us, around us, or against us.  The heavenly Judge has forgiven us our sins in Christ, and we are free to obey and serve our dear Savior.

Christian friend, do not lose the perspective that God has rescued you in Christ.  You are not what you used to be, and you are changed for the rest of your life.  You belong to Jesus, and you are His servant in His kingdom.  You do not belong to the domain of darkness; now you are a child of God.  Do not lose your hope, and do not give up your sense of identity and purpose; you belong to Jesus now and forever.  Rejoice and give thanks.

Prayer: Dear Lord, help me to live a life of praise and thanksgiving to You for what you have done for me in Christ.  Help me to see myself as Your trophy of grace.  I no longer belong to this fallen world; I belong to Jesus.  So, help me to live my life in such a way as to demonstrate this glorious truth.  Amen.
