Week 18
Psalm 55:6-8 “Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest. Behold, I would wander far away, I would lodge in the wilderness. I would hasten to my place of refuge, from the stormy wind and tempest.”
This is the common wish of the soul pressed heavily with burdens and cares. This is the common quest for those who live in circumstances that cast the shadow of need and sorrow. Somehow, we feel that if we could just “fly away”, then we would “be at rest.” Is this escapism? Is this imaginative flight to some contemplative island of paradise? Or is this the cry of the heart for help and relief?
Often the psalmist speaks of God as his refuge and shelter. He finds in the Lord a respite from the hurt of trouble, for in the Lord he finds grace and mercy to help him in times of need.
True rest of heart is not so much of flying away from something but flying away to the Lord. Sweet peace and solace come to the soul that flies away to the Lord. In the Lord, we find acceptance, correction, support, strength, and kind understanding. The Lord knows and understands the desert we are in, and He relates to us as One who shares our difficulties. We can share our hearts and pour out our supplications to Him, and He understands (Psalm 62:8). Our precious Lord understands and cares for us.
The key to peace of mind and restfulness of soul is SURRENDER to the Lord your hopes and expectations. When we fly away to Jesus, we yield to Him; we say to Him, “Your will be done!” And we mean this sincerely. There is no better plan than the Lord’s will, and there is no greater good than His will being done in our lives. Flying away to Jesus means turning over your desires and hopes, your dreams and aspirations to the Savior, who knows what is best for you. God’s will is what you would choose if you knew everything about your life and future that God knows. He cannot fail to lead in the proper path. Many times, painful moments in life are God’s corrections to get us back on track. We cannot lose if we choose Jesus! No matter what you face today, fly away to Jesus!
Prayer: Dear Lord, I am in need of flying away to You. There in your arms, I will find comfort, kindness, and gentle support for my weary soul. Thank You for Your love and Your grace; grant that I may walk with You all my days.
