Week 15: Psalm 84:5-7

Week 15: Psalm 84:5-7

Week 15

Psalm 84:5-7 “How blessed is the man whose strength is in You, in whose heart are the highways to Zion!  Passing through the valley of Baca they make it a spring…They go from strength to strength, every one of them appears before God in Zion.”

When Jesus saves a sinner, He changes the sinner’s heart; He puts within the heart the “highways to Zion.”  This is a change in nature, a change in direction, and a change in affections.  The sinner becomes a saint in his or her heart!  How blessed this person truly is!

There are many times, however, that the child of God traveling to Zion in this life encounters trials and difficulties.  There are seasons of sorrow when the burning heat of tribulation saps the energy and life of faith.  However, as the text says, “Passing through the valley of Baca (weeping) they make it a spring (an oasis).”  Yes, life brings its valleys of Baca where it seems that our tears flow like rivers of anguish, but even then, the desert of our weakness is turned into an oasis of refreshing fountains!  Walking with our Savior through the valley of tears turns it into a “spring” of everlasting life!  This was the very metaphor that Jesus used with the woman at the well.  Jesus said, “The water that I give…will become…a well of water springing up to eternal life (John 4:14).”  Again, Jesus spoke in such a fashion on the last day of a great feast, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.  He who believes in Me…from his innermost being will flow rivers of living water (John 7:37-38).”

The life journey of a Christian, though he or she walks through difficult days, is one that goes from “strength to strength”, until every child of God “appears before God in Zion (the beautiful city of God).”  This is not our strength; this is the strength of our blessed Savior!  He gives us His strength to travel along the dusty roads of our pilgrimage.  And by God’s saving grace, one day we will arrive at home, the eternal city of our God!  We are refreshed along the way by eternal fountains of living water in Jesus Christ to keep our souls alive and renewed until that great day of our homegoing.

Christian friend, are you walking this day through a desert of sorrow or sadness?  Do your feet travel a dusty path of hardship and trial?  There is for you an oasis of pleasure, rest, and renewal in Jesus Christ.  Look to Him and draw from Him refreshment and joy to continue your journey; He will grant what you need until you find yourself at Home forever.

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank You for being with me through the good times and the hard times of my life.  Thank You for giving to me living water for my soul.  Thank You for refreshing me along the way when I am weary and tired.  Please grant to me this day the grace to walk with You and know You in Your sweetness for the satisfaction of my soul and the sustaining of my faith.  Thank You.  Amen.
