Controlled by the Love of Christ
2 Corinthians 5:14 “For the love of Christ controls us…”
Philippians 3:7 “But whatever things were gain to me, those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ. More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.”
Paul was consumed by love and desire for Christ! His most ardent passion in his pre-saved life was replaced by a deep longing for Christ in his new life as a Christian. He was the original “Jesus Freak.” Everything in Paul’s life related to Christ; every decision, every value, every issue, and every consideration all found meaning and significance in relationship to the person and work of Jesus Christ.
Jonathan Edwards in his “Religious Affections”, speaking of Paul’s love for Jesus, says the following: “He (Paul) appears to have been a person full of affection, and it is very manifest that the religion he expresses in his epistles consisted very much in holy affections. It appears by all his expressions of himself, that he was, in the course of his life, inflamed, actuated, and entirely swallowed up by a most ardent love to his glorious Lord, esteeming all things to be loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Him…”
Through the writing and example of Paul, each of us Christians is called by God to a deeper, richer, and more authentic love for Christ. And the more we love Christ, the more the love of Christ will shine through us to others. This is the need of the hour: Christians must fall more and more in love with Jesus, showing this love and passion in their lives.
Would you not join with me in this prayer: “Dear Lord, make me to love you truly, sincerely, wholeheartedly, and totally. Help me to value Jesus above all and yield myself to Jesus in His life and kingdom work through all. I want to show with my life the faith that I have in my heart. Amen.”
